Location: Paris, France
Venue: Salle Wagram

The Robbins Company is excited to announce that the recently completed Túnel Emisor Poniente (TEP) II has been nominated as an ITA Tunneling Awards finalist for Project of the Year. Winners will be announced at the ITA Tunneling Awards that will take place during the AFTES Congress in Paris, France on November 15.

The Robbins XRE TBM and its Robbins continuous conveyor system were built on location using Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA), and featured components like a convertible cutterhead with interchangeable cutting tools, interchangeable TBM belt conveyor and screw conveyor, and multi-speed gearboxes to increase torque for tunneling through difficult ground. The 8.7 m (28.5 ft) diameter Robbins Crossover TBM bored a 5.8 km (3.6 mi) long wastewater tunnel, setting two national records in the process. The completed project will prevent flooding in urban areas and benefit the lives of 2.1 million people.

TBM Disc Cutters in the Field: Extreme Tunnel Conditions Inform the Latest Cutting Tool Advancements | Paper Author: Steve Smading

Extreme tunneling conditions call for the most robust TBM cutting tools possible—whether that includes hard and abrasive rock, long-distance tunnels of 15 km or more, or high water pressures.  This paper examines the use of disc cutters under extreme conditions and the design aspects making the difficult tunneling process possible. Resulting cutter design changes and more will be outlined in the presentation along with initial results from field and laboratory testing.

Difficult Ground Solutions: A Methodology for Enhanced TBM Performance in Challenging Conditions | Paper Author: Doug Harding

In many rock projects, the occurrence of squeezing ground, high inrushes of water, blocky rock, and other challenges is a real possibility.  Today’s highly adaptable TBMs are capable of tackling these tough conditions using cutting-edge technology coupled with modern ground investigation methods. Difficult Ground Solutions (DGS)—a series of adaptable and customizable features for shielded TBMs—can reduce risk to contractors and owners while providing accurate ground investigation.  This paper covers difficult ground solutions informed by field experiences, the tools it takes to be successful in such conditions, and how they are applied. Example projects will be discussed from the U.S., Turkey, Nepal, and more.

Complimentary Webinar: Performance Under Pressure

Earth Pressure Balance Machines (EPBs) are by far the most widely used type of TBM in the tunneling world, but their proper design and use in varying geologies is not often discussed. Clay, sand, gravel, mixed face conditions and boulders each require unique EPB designs and expert operation. Whether that means utilizing abrasion resistant plating, heavy duty screw conveyors, or customized cutting tools, today’s EPBs are up for the challenge. With regards to operation, using the right RPM, the proper additives, and detailed monitoring can keep subsidence at a minimum and reduce downtime.

In this complimentary 60-minute webinar, Robbins Engineering Manager Brad Grothen and Robbins Chief EPB Engineer Shinichi Konda will explore how EPB TBMs work, their various designs, and real-world applications. They will draw from field data in multiple types of geologies to make informed recommendations on EPB design and operation. Areas for advancement will also be discussed”” including high tool wear and the ability to properly form a plug.

We invite you to submit your questions beforehand to webinars@robbinstbm.com to get a thoughtful and well-researched answer during the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.
